You can actually download the game like, free online is what he meant. The only physical purchases are the expansions and the monthly expense.

He could just port to TB or even SM for a trainer.
I just hearth to Dalaran on my paladin after leveling up, take a portal to Org/SM, learn what I need, then take the mage trainer room portal to the Dark Portal and fly back to where I was leveling at.

You don't need to not be there just because there are no trainers, Unba.
