Well, the things you've shown on the screenshot have nothing to do with viruses, just with using your computer. It's like if you keep shoving stuff into and taking stuff out of a cupboard for a year and never sorting it.

To the people who wonder how a virus can infect you without your knowledge.

Whenever you visit a site, the contents of that site is downloaded to the computer. If it wasn't you would not be able to view the site. Everything is downloaded and stored in RAM/cache. As the files are now on your computer, they can now be activated. I have heard of viruses that are embedded inside picture files, JavaScript and Java files. There are most likely quite a lot more ways to infect a computer, but apart from Java files, none of those are programs and as such can run at any time without the users consent.

I will be honest, I don't see this being such a dilemma that people need to stay off Tumblr. As long as you have some anti-virus system in place you should be fine. If I was so afraid of catching a virus from a random page of Tumblr, I might as well stay off the entire internet.

It is good that you informed us, but I think people just need to use this event to make sure they have the proper security for their computers.

That's kinda not the point. The point is its extra risky than it was before. Yes, there was probably a very slim chance that you could get a virus before this panic, but it was slim to none because it was trusted website. I dunno about you, but when a trusted website gets compromised, going onto it is a terrible idea.

Anti-viruses can't catch it all, you know. Viruses are constantly evolving. You have to use common sense too.

I do a scan every other day, but more on weekends since that's when I'm online the most. I don't even go to tumbr, though.

This is true, you can store just about anytihng inside an image (like music and stuff) but I'm not sure if it's possible to have one that activates by itself.

If you are ever told to download an image and then run it as .bat or with java or something then don't even consider doing it.

Yeah, code stored in pictures won't start all by itself. It's the same as when you have it in a text file. Just having the code doesn't make it an executable program.

I have to say, this original message is fishy at best. "Simple deduction" nothing. Viruses often re-occur after getting rid of them, regardless of what you do. No matter how many times we got rid of the google redirect virus on our old computer it came back. Unless tumblr specifically said that someone has compromised our systems and viruses are running amok, I don't think there is anything to be worried about. Did anyone else report these "keyloggers"?

as far as i know, one can't easily contract malware from read-only media such as images or music
